Legal Structure
The Institute of Asian Affairs is legally independent. Together with the
Institute
of Comparative Overseas Studies and the regionally oriented institutes
of area studies, Institute
of African Affairs, Institute
for Ibero-American Studies and German
Orient Institute, it forms the German
Overseas Institute. The German
Overseas Institute is jointly financed by the Federal Republic of
Germany (represented by the Foreign Ministry) and the Free and Hanseatic
City of Hamburg (represented by the Economic Department) within the framework
of the so-called "blue list". The "blue list" is based
on an agreement between the Federal Government and the Länder, passed
in 1975, to coordinate the support of research institutions with activities
of nation-wide relevance and of national scientific interest.
